One of Hysters main safety concerns is safety. It is why they provide many pieces of optional safety devices that could be included to either the work place or the machine itself. Following the standards of OSHA, Hyster makes both visible and audible warning devices as well as work and head lamps.
The only warning device required on the lift truck according to OSHA and ASME B56.1 regulations is the steering wheel horn. The horn is standard on all types of lift trucks. Though lift trucks are not required to have both audible or visible warning devices, there are some situations where optional warning devices could be suitable. These factors are unique to every work site or work place and each situation should be considered individually.
Motion alarms or back-up alarms are the most common safety devices. The noise produced by these alarms are the main factor to take into consideration. To begin with, the audible device must be able to be distinguished from other noises in the work site and the sound needs to be extremely loud to be heard in the work site, even if other equipment could be working. The ability for workers to hear alarms and determine where the noise is coming from could be compromised if workers are wearing hearing protection devices. If the alarms are too offensive or disruptive to employees, nearby companies, or nearby houses, alarms may have to be disabled. If sound must be disabled, this should be able to take place readily. Regulations also need to be followed to ensure that the levels of noise do not exceed OSHA noise limits.
Visible safety devices might include the common flashing, strobe or rotating lights. Things to think about with visible safety devices include whether or not these devices might be more appropriate than audible devices. Driver distraction, workplace lighting and presence of reflective surfaces are main priorities to take into account to make sure that safety devices are effective and do not pose a danger to drivers or other workers. Safety light colours must be different from other lights and background surfaces that are within the work place. Position of safety devices are of utmost importance. Lights must be able to clear any overhead obstacles. Position of lights must not cause the lights to reflect or shine into the operator's eyes, but shielding of the lights should not excessively obstruct the light's visibility to pedestrians.
To suit numerous application requirements, Hyster has a range of optional lights which comprise weather-resistant LED and halogen lights. These lights can hold up through vibration and shock as well. As for head lamps and work lamps, OSHA has set standards to make working at night or in dark work spaces safer. Directional lighting is required if the lift truck lighting produces less than 2 lumens per square foot. Hyster has numerous alternatives that will truly help increase visibility in low-light conditions.
